Taipei 101

Posted on May 26, 2008 under Impressive buildings, Owings and Merrill (SOM), Samsung Engineering & Construction, Taipei | 5 Comments

Taipei 101 is one of the tallest building in the world. It is a skyscraper with 101 floors and is located in Taipei, Taiwan. Taipei 101, designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners and constructed from May 1995 to March 2005 primarily by the South Korean multinational Samsung Engineering & Construction, has 508 m.

In 2004, Taipei 101 received the Emporis Skyscraper Award, and was considered one of the new Seven Wonders in the world.

The Taipei 101 stands as an icon of Taipei and Taiwan as a whole. Its safety features enable it to withstand typhoons and earthquakes. Its postmodern style combines tradition and modernity in ways that appear simultaneously Asian and international. Fireworks launched from Taipei 101 feature prominently in international New Year’s Eve broadcasts, and the landmark appears frequently in television shows, films, print publications, games, , anime media and other elements of popular culture.

Earthquake Safety: Designing a building this large presented unique challenges because Taiwan is subject to typhoons and earthquakes. To counter movement, a tuned mass damper system has been incorporated into the structure. The 800-metric ton (1,764,000 lbs.), spherical steel mass is located on level 88 and will be visible from the restaurant and observation decks. The system transfers the energy from the building to the swinging sphere, providing a stabilizing force.
