Gate Tower Building is a 16-story office building, located in Osaka, Jpana which is known in entire world because a highway passes through the building.
Designed by Azusa Sekkei and Yamamoto-Nishihara Kenchiku Sekkei Jimusho, and build by Sato Kogyo Co. Ltd. Gate Tower Building was completed in 1992. It has 16 floors above ground, 2 floors underground and 1 floor counted as the mechanical penthouse and a total height of 71,9 meters. A helipad
This idea was born because some conflicts between the property rights holders and Hanshin Expressway corporation (highway constructor) and after five years of negotiations they reach the current solution: between store 5 and 7 the building is passed through by a Highway like in the following picture:
The highway pass the building as a bridge, being held by supports near the building. It doesn’t make contact with the building actually. The elevator pass through the highway’s stores without the possibility to stop (from floor 4 it goes directly to 8).
The highways laws, city planning laws and other necessary laws for this kind of structure were partially revised in 1989 to permit the construction. Otherwise it couldn’t have been be built. Usually the highways are built on underground and there is no necessary to pass through buildings or is very easy to change their route just to avoid such a situation.
